NOTE SPECIAL DAY -- MONDAY

DATE: Monday, October 28, 2019
TIME: 12:00 - 1:00 pm
PLACE: GHC 4405

SPEAKER: Yiting Xia, Facebook

TITLE: Building Dynamic Data Center Networks with Distributed Small Optical Switches

ABSTRACT:
In this talk, the speaker will make a case that distributed placement of small optical switches is a cost-effective solution to building topology-dynamic data center networks. Three example architectures will be shown as different use cases of this approach. OmniSwitch is a production-ready modular container as a universal building block for data centers, which provides local topology optimization, simple network maintenance, and large-scale connectivity. Flat-tree improves transmission performance of traffic by dynamically changing topological clustering characteristics of the network, such as converting between Clos and random graph topologies. ShareBackup enhances reliability through sharing backup switches efficiently network-wide, where a backup switch can be brought online instantaneously to recover from failures. At the end of the talk, the speaker will briefly introduce research projects at Facebook and opportunities for internships and research collaborations.
