Computer Scientist – Parallel I/O

Job Description

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2, Scientist 3, or Scientist 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

As the successful candidate, you will join a team researching and developing the software architecture/infrastructure of current and future mission-oriented physics simulation projects.  The focus for this position is the research and development, and integration of parallel I/O software for complex, multi-physics codes across a variety of high-performance computing (HPC) architectures.

Scientist 2 ($91,800 - $151,400)

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Research, develop, and integrate parallel I/O software routinely run on the world’s largest high-performance computers
  • Work with team members to make modifications and additions to existing parallel I/O software
  • Work both independently and collaboratively in technically diverse teams
  • Present the results of research and development at conferences, workshops, and meetings

Scientist 3 ($101,000 - $168,600)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Scientist 3 will be required to:

  • Work with limited direction, and contribute to technical decision making in areas of expertise
  • Contribute to proposals and/or programmatic scope for research and implementation of new methods, frameworks and programming models
  • Interact with people from other internal and external organizations and programs to create collaborations
  • Mentor junior scientists and students

Scientist 4 ($122,200 ‐ $205,900)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Scientist 3 will be required to:

  • Lead proposals and/or major components of programmatic work for self and others.
  • Establish and maintain collaborations both internally and externally to meet project needs.
  • Contribute to peer review of the work of others across organizations and disciplines nationally, including participation in related conference and workshop committees.
  • Work closely with high level project leads and program managers to insure their projects are successful.
What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience with C or C++
  • Demonstrated experience in parallel/concurrent programming
  • Demonstrated ability to accept initial direction and requirements from technical project leads
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively to complete deliverables by a deadline

Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Scientist 3 level requires:

  • Demonstrated experience with an HPC technology (e.g. MPI, GPUs, many-core) in delivered product
  • Demonstrated experience presenting the results of research at conferences, workshops and meetings
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in computer science and high-performance computing planning activities at a national or international level

Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 4:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Scientist 4 level requires:

  • Demonstrated senior technical leadership that brings various organizations, teams/individuals together with a common goal to create an efficient, cost effective, performance‐based solution to a particular problem/need.
  • Advanced knowledge of or experience with large and complex high performance computing software.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate large‐scale projects to solve technology challenges

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with parallel I/O software such as MPI I/O, HDF5, or parallel NetCDF
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and multidisciplinary scientific environment
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance

Scientist 2 Education Required:  A minimum of a B.S., MS is preferred in Computer Science, Computational Science, Applied Mathematics or a related field from an accredited college or university and two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Scientist 3 Education Required:  A minimum of a B.S., MS is preferred in Computer Science, Computational Science, Applied Mathematics or a related field from an accredited college or university and four years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Scientist 4 Education Required:  A minimum of a B.S., MS is preferred in Computer Science, Computational Science, Applied Mathematics or a related field from an accredited college or university and six years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Additional Details

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).  Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements:  To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
