NASD Cheops: A High-Performance Scalable Storage Service

    Cheops is a Client-exposed Highly Expandable OPtimistically-synchronized Storage service. Cheops is motivated by the existence of smart network-attached storage devices such as NASDs and by scalable interconnects (system-area networks) allowing clusters to comprise thousands of NASD devices at once.

    The high level goal of Cheops is to provide a high-performance storage service that, in turn, provides configurable performance and fault-tolerance on a per-file (object) basis while scaling to very large sizes, i.e. thousands of NASD devices and clients. The focus is on shaping the NASD interface, as well as on the architecture and protocols that enable such scaling cost-effectively.
